You will definitely like his “island”-type keyboard, and we have no stomach pain with it. The keys are large enough and tactile, which offer faster typing. In all the keys are almost completely protected from falling debris. There are no dedicated number pad. However, the most important keys like Shift, Alt and Tab in good size.

The touch pad is washed into the palm rest. The touchpad is not enough size to slide to scroll or. The touchpad supports multi-touch and multi-gesture, to be precise zoom and scroll. Samsung RV510 / 15.6-inch Laptop review

Samsung RV510 / 15.6-inch Laptop review
Samsung has launched the 15.6-inch Rv510 easy access and efficient laptop. Priced at around $ 480, it is certainly possible, but because it uses the Intel Pentium Dual-Core T4500 chip modes could in fact be so strong? Samsung had the ability, good looks and computer design Rv510 tradition. The elegant black cover and silver and black with a keyboard and palm rest, give it looks more premium than expected probably price.Samsung RV 510 is a powerful notebook with a 15.6-inch Rv510 all attractive prices. Dell vostro 1000 battery comes with a premium dual-core Intel Core processor T4500. Graphics Card Intel Graphics Media Accelerator GMA 4500M. Glossy screen is 15.6 inches and 16.9 inches with 1366 x 768 pixels.

As business and Samsung P530 Rev 510 uses a hybrid keyboard and isolated in a traditional style. He isolated a wide, flat keys, but they are stronger on a traditional keyboard groups. The results are excellent. The keyboard is almost in the middle of a lot of flexibility and the travel and subsistence expenses in the form of species TotalMix look good. Almost all buttons are displayed in full size Samsung also has to fit in the room was on the arrow keys and a full numeric keypad. Here is small compared with some other 15-inch laptop with Dell vostro 1310 battery , but the matte finish to keep your fingers glide easily on the surface, and two chrome buttons were prepared very accommodating.
Samsung RV510 / 15.6-inch Laptop review
Samsung is the screen, matte or glossy finish is gone, but it’s not a bad thing, because it reduces glare matte surface itself, which is more convenient to use for a long time. LED backlighting is very strong, which in turn color differences. Viewing angles are also a good standard of budget laptops of Dell vostro 1510 battery . Resolution 1366 x768 pixels is not so great, although the text, images and video can still be reasonably sharp.Samsung not too generous selection of ports. For example, should be satisfied with only a VGA port, the cover with the HDMI connection. You can also just three USB ports, and RV 510 no eSATA port or the ExpressCard slot. No Bluetooth, but 802.11n Wi-Fi enabled.

Shop front Rv510 is impressive. This is a huge 640 GB hard drive, which offers enough space to store multimedia files such as movies and photos. It is also an SD card slot and front spoiler and side.To DVD recorder hidden right keep the price low for a laptop, Samsung is using the Intel Pentium dual-core T4500 processor with 2.3 GHz clock frequency and high-spec, Intel Core chips i3 . The processor supports a healthy 4GB of RAM, and thanks to the fact that Samsung has gone for 64-bit Windows 7 Home Basic, this laptop is using Dell latitude d820 battery .Unfortunately close PCMark05 benchmark text shown denied. If it is clear that the machine lacked pizzazz into contact with more demanding applications, even if it’s a great day tasks such as e-mail, word processing, internet surfing or watching the BBC iPlayer.

Instead, opt for a separate graphics card, but Samsung does not put a plain old Intel GMA integrated graphics processor. Integrated graphics has never been the result of a very important test of 3DMark06. Rv510 gently in only 904 points, worse than some netbooks.That mean that you throw all the ideas you can play newer games out the window, but the chance to play many older 3D titles is given. GPU works perfectly, but when it comes to more mundane tasks, such as high-definition video decoding. We have had problems playing HD streams on the BBC iPlayer, for example, or high-definition movies in MKV format of Asus Eee PC 904 battery .

Less powerful processor and graphics card also seems to assume that a decent performance, when it comes to battery life. The most intensive battery test eating, it’s been chugging away for 1 hour and 26 minutes, which is not bad 15.6-inch device. Battery Battery Eater test simulates the worst case scenario, so that a real bear will be a lot more than mains.The Samsung Rev 510 is a beautiful machine with an impressive display and keyboard. Its processor grunt, however, and 3D performance is very bad. His initial bid was originally booked and inspiron 710m battery pretty good, but it’s starting to look less attractive as cheaper and faster than the Acer Aspire 5741st.[batterytimes.info]

Samsung N210 / 10.1-inch Netbook review

Samsung N210
Samsung has launched its N210 which is powered by it features Intel Atom N450 Pine Trail processors, multit-touch touchpads, matte screens, and a new island-style keyboard design. And the Samsung N210 and N220 are no different. What sets these netbooks apart from Samsung’s other offerings is a 6 cell, 5600mAh battery which Samsung says can power the laptops for up to 12 hours.

The N210 and N220 also have a 3D textured pattern on the lid and ship with the Phoenix HyperSpace quick boot environment.

All of the press materials I’ve seen for the N210 and N220 so far pretty much group the two netbooks together as if they were identical. And in most respects they are. But the Samsung N220 is destined for Europe, while the N210 will be available in the US as early as this week.

The primary physical difference between the two laptops is the keyboard. The Samsung N220 has an extra large enter key that takes up more space than the enter key on the N210, while the N210 has a wider shift button on the right side of the keyboard. There are a few other minor differences in the keyboard, but as far as I can tell, the hardware specs for both models are pretty much identical.[liliputing.com]

Samsung NC10 10.1-inch Netbook Review

Samsung NC10 10.1-inch Netbook Review
It recent years it was very impressive how Samsung has grown from strength in the production of some of the elegant and powerful tech gadgets on the market. From the looks of sales and popularity of the brand is now so much progress in netbooks.

Like most netbooks on the market have almost identical specs, manufacturers are seeking even in terms of design features and differentiate. A good example is the Samsung N110 netbook would be blue.The Samsung NC10 Blue was at home on the bestseller list of the charts for most of last year and the new N110 looks so far from the line.

If you've had a look at the Samsung N110, you'll see immediately what is the hype. It stands out from the crown with its subtle matte black outer casing. In fact, in the N150 series is the blue model is the only one with a matt surface which is much more resistant to fingerprints and smudges on glossy paper in comparison with thoseSurfaces.

This model can be used as a model of the environment budget midrange with classic features an Intel N450 processor, 1GB of RAM and a 160GB hard drive. The 10.1-inch screen has a matte surface, reducing glare in bright light. Some other features include a memory card reader, wireless-N Wi-Fi and stereo speakers. Is underway on the new operating system Windows 7. The battery of this new model can hold up to seven hours at once.

As part of the screen andKeyboard area is as beautiful as its exterior. This area is all black, he also brings to light the blue facade. Overall feels very stable and the netbook is nearly silent in operation. With beauty, great information and a cheap, blue Samsung N110 prove very convincing to many. Samsung R610 / 16-inch Laptop Specs

Samsung R610 / 16-inch Laptop Specs
Samsung's laptop range offers the latest technology at low prices.
Combining a high-definition (HD) screen and strong specification, the Samsung R610 (£699 inc. VAT) is the most affordable full-HD laptop you can currently buy.
The 1920 x 1080-pixel screen of the Samsung lets you view HD content in full resolution, as well as connect to an HDTV via its HDMI-out port.

Lightweight laptop

The 16-inch screen is bright and vibrant, and ideal for multimedia use. Its 16:9 aspect ratio also ensures widescreen movies fit the screen perfectly, so black borders at the top and bottom of the screen are all but eliminated when watching Blu-ray discs or standard DVDs.

The 2.8kg chassis is quite large, but also reasonably light. While you won't want to carry it for long periods, its light weight provides basic mobility, while the 156-minute battery life lets you work on short journeys and around the home.

The large chassis allows for an equally large keyboard and usability is fantastic. The keyboard is well fixed and smooth to use, as are the touchpad and mouse buttons. A full pad of number-keys is also included for easy data input and making calculations on the fly.

Blu-ray support

As with all laptops in this group, performance is basic, but suits home and office use. The Intel Core 2 Duo processor and 3072MB of memory lets you easily multi-task, run office software and edit digital video and photos with ease.

Graphics performance falls short of some of its rivals, but again is ample for home use. The nVidia graphics card isn't ideal for modern gaming, but provides power for playback and editing of HD video; essential for use with the Samsung's Blu-ray drive.

Blu-ray support is read-only, so you cannot write data to high-capacity recordable discs. Standard DVDs and CDs can be recorded and the 250GB hard drive provides plenty of space for storing HD video, music and photos.

Top notch value

A range of proprietary software tools improve usability and let first-time buyers quickly get to grips with using the laptop.

Finally, an integrated camera above the screen also lets you use online video messaging software to stay in touch with friends and family around the world.

While not the most powerful laptop, the full-HD power, usability and low price of the Samsung R610 make it a great buy. For the price, you'd be hard-pressed to find yourself a better laptop.

Samsung X360 / 13.3-inch Laptop Review

Samsung X360 / 13.3-inch Laptop Review
If you’ve fallen in love with the MacBook Air but just can’t stand the thought of muddling through OS X, becoming a snooty Mac user, or suffering through Apple’s skin-deep quality and often-shoddy workmanship, Samsung is aiming its .66-inch-thin X360 laptop directly at you.

This 13.3-inch laptop weighs a mere 2.8 pounds and shines where the MacBook Air skimps: It’s the inputs, stupid. How’s three USB ports (compared to the Air’s 1), a 7-in-1 card reader (compared to the Air’s none), HDMI and Ethernet ports (no such thing on the Air), VGA port, and of course, Wi-Fi, 1.3-megapixel camera, LED-backlit display, and a 128GB solid-state hard drive sound?

Best yet, a couple of our buddies have laid their hands on this beauty and tell us it’s solid as a rock. Now if Samsung can just beat that MacBook Air price — which should be easy to do — it’ll make the MacBook Air look like it’s for AirHeads. For all the details, see the Samsung press release after the jump, or just peek at the gallery below to see the luxo finishes, colors and beauty of this fine machine. We want.

Samsung's Press Release:

Berlin, Germany, August 29, 2008 - Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., a market leader in consumer electronics and world leader in IT technology, today lifted the lid on the most innovative addition to its ever expanding notebook range – the ultra-lightweight Samsung X360. Overall system performance is also significantly enhanced, as the SSD is capable of reading 300 times faster (53 MB/s) and writes 150 percent faster (28 MB/s) than typical HDDs, and the seek time (the amount of time required to find information in the system memory) is also greatly reduced. Having no moving parts means that power consumption is reduced dramatically, extending battery life, and it is capable of withstanding much greater impacts, so there is no loss of data.

Samsung Q430-11 / 14-inch Laptops Review

Samsung Q430-11 / 14-inch Laptops Review
These are truly renaissance days for the thin-and-light laptop, with a wealth of superior models at very moderate prices. Samsung is trying to make a name for itself in this very competitive segment of the U.S. laptop market, and entries like its Q430-11 should certainly help. This 14-inch thin-and-light entry hits the sweet spot, delivering sleek-yet-understated good looks and strong performance in a package that will appeal to both everyday consumers and small-business buyers alike. Available exclusively from Best Buy (both in stores and online), the Q430-11 sells for a very reasonable $915. The battery life could be better, but by most other measures, the Q430-11 matches (and sometimes exceeds) the best in its price class.

The Q430-11 weighs 5 pounds and measures 1.3 inches thick. That makes it a bit bulkier than our current Editors’ Choice in this class, the HP Pavilion dm4t, which weighs 4.4 pounds and measures an inch thick at the front (expanding to 1.3 inches at the rear). Like the dm4t, the Q430-11 features a sleek aluminum chassis; the Q430-11’s case has a brushed black lid that looks sharp, while the dm4t goes with a brushed-silver design with etching that looks equally good. The clean, modern look of the Q430-11 continues inside, where a brushed-silver area surrounding the keyboard sets off the simple black keys, and the screen’s edge-to-edge glass suggests high-end consumer electronics. Two details were compromised, however: The chrome-finish mouse buttons look cool but show off every fingerprint, and to keep the minimalist look, Samsung opted not to include multimedia or other shortcut buttons.

Around the edges, you’ll find the typical array of ports and slots, with one expected item missing and one unexpected item present. The USB port on the left edge employs Samsung’s Chargeable USB feature, which lets the laptop charge a connected device (iPhone, iPod, Flip camera, or what-have-you) even when the laptop is in standby mode or completely off. You also get two regular USB ports, a LAN jack, VGA and HDMI ports for connecting external displays, and an SD/SDHC/MultiMediaCard flash-memory slot. (Note that the slots on most other notebooks support more formats.) Like many other consumer-oriented laptops, the Q430-11 doesn't include an ExpressCard slot. Less forgivable is the absence of an eSATA port for connecting high-speed external hard drives and the like. eSATA is common even on many budget notebooks these days.

As for other features, the Q430-11 does not disappoint. You’ll find a multiformat DVD burner, a generous 500GB hard drive, and wireless networking in the form of 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi. At this price, we would also like to see Bluetooth wireless for communicating with smartphones and the like, a feature the Q430-11 lacks. On the plus side, the full-size keyboard is roomy, comfortable, and quiet. We also have no complaints about the unit’s VGA Webcam, which delivered an excellent image in a brightly lit room, displaying sharp detail, good exposure and color reproduction, and no motion blur. In a dim room, the camera also did well, with decent exposure (although noticeable motion blur), and the camera even delivered a usable image with only the light from the screen.

The 14-inch screen is another gem. The LED backlight helps colors pop and lets the panel conserve power. The 1,366x768 resolution is appropriate (and typical) for a panel this size, delivering crisp, legible text and icons. The panel also did well with video, exhibiting natural colors, excellent detail in shadow areas, and no discernible motion blur in action scenes. As with other laptops, the Q430-11’s stereo speakers are fine for typical Web video and for watching a movie, but the volume isn’t powerful enough to fill a room. Music reproduction is mediocre at best.

What isn’t mediocre is the performance from the Q430-11. Powered by a 2.4GHz Intel Core i5-450M CPU and 4GB of RAM, the laptop delivered scores on our tests that were generally above average for the class and in line with like-priced competitors such as the HP Pavilion dm4t and Asus U30Jc-1A. For example, on the 32-bit version of our PCMark Vantage test suite, which measures overall system performance, the Q430-11 scored 5,553, which is essentially a tie with the dm4t’s 5,516 on that test and notably higher than the Asus U30Jc-1A’s 4,744. On the 64-bit version of the same test, the Q430-11 scored 6,019—slightly above the HP entry’s 5,933, nearly 1,000 points better than the Asus system's result, and 600 points better than the average for this class of laptop. On the 64-bit version of another of our standard tests, Cinebench 10, which taxes all the available cores of the CPU, the Samsung entry scored 8,332 to the HP’s 8,190. It also handily beat the class average of 5,867 and the Asus U30Jc-1A’s 6,857.

The Q430-11 also proved to be a strong multimedia performer. It completed our Windows Media Encoder trial (in which the test laptop converts a standard video clip) in a tick under four minutes (compared with 4:09 for the HP Pavilion dm4t, 4:50 for the Asus model, and over five minutes for thin-and-lights as a whole). And on our iTunes test (which measures the time it takes to convert 11 standard MP3 files to AAC format), the Q430-11 took a bit longer than the HP and Asus competitors—3:41, versus 3:09 and 3:15. That's a detectable, but not huge, real-world difference.

Where you will see a difference in real-world use is in 3D-graphics performance. The Samsung Q430-11 employs a dedicated Nvidia GeForce 310M graphics chip, compared with the integrated graphics solution found in most—but not all—machines in this price class. That allowed the Q430-11 to deliver excellent scores on our 3D tests. On our 3DMark06 test (which measures DirectX 9 graphics performance) at 1,024x768 resolution, the Q430-11 managed 4,209, which is double the score posted by the HP Pavilion dm4t (2,098). However, the like-priced Asus U30Jc-1A kept pace. It features Nvidia's battery-saving Optimus hybrid graphics technology, which automatically activates the discrete graphics when necessary and then reverts to integrated graphics when not. The Asus machine scored a very close 4,091 on 3DMark06 at the same resolution.

The 3D-gaming abilities of the Q430-11 were also a pleasant surprise, seeing as some similarly priced competitors make you forgo high-frame-rate 3D gaming. For example, the HP Pavilion dm4t mustered only 22.3 frames per second (fps) at 1,024x768 resolution on our Company of Heroes test, and that number shrank to an unplayable 15.9fps at 1,366x768 with graphics effects set to high. In contrast, the Q430-11 rolled along at 47.2fps at the lower resolution setting and a still-playable 29.4fps at the higher one. (For its part, the Nvidia GeForce 310M chip in the Asus U30Jc-1A delivered an identical 47.2fps at 1,024x768 and a slightly better 33fps at the higher resolution.) What this tells us: Gaming within reason at these moderate resolutions is well within the skill set of the Q430-11, and social-media or Web-centric games will present no problem.

The Q430-11 cedes ground to its competitors, though, in battery life. On our DVD rundown test, in which we loop a DVD movie (with screen brightness set to 50 percent) until the battery dies, the Q430-11’s six-cell battery lasted 2 hours and 41 minutes, well short of the 4:27 we saw from the HP Pavilion dm4t and shy of the three-plus hours typical for the class. What’s more, this is where Nvidia’s Optimus technology really stands out: The Optimus-equipped Asus U30Jc-A1 lasted 4:18 on this test. There’s no reason for Samsung not to include it on this system, and the omission costs the notebook a bunch of much-needed runtime.

You don’t get short-changed when it comes to software, however. In addition to the Windows 7 Home Premium operating system and all its goodies, Samsung preloads the excellent CyberLink DVD Suite for multimedia playback and creation. The easy-to-use suite includes PowerDVD 8 for DVD playback; PowerDirector 7 for video editing; PowerProducer 8 for DVD creation; and Power2Go 6 for burning all manner of data, video, photo, and music CDs and DVDs. You also get CyberLink's YouCam software for use with the Webcam, another intuitive utility that features frames, stamps, avatars, filters, and more. (It also lets you send video captures to YouTube or via e-mail with a single click.)

Samsung also preloads its own handy utilities. At initial boot-up, the Samsung Recovery Solution 4 software prompts you to create a backup image to the hard drive or an optical disc. The company also delivers a battery-life extension utility; Easy Content Share (for allowing Q430-resident music, photos, and video to be accessed by other Windows 7- and Vista-based PCs on your network); Easy File Share (used to transfer files from the host PC via Wi-Fi); and more.

We also like how Samsung (and partner Best Buy) have handled the problem of “offerware.” Instead of cluttering the desktop with teasers for software and services, Samsung and Best Buy rolled them all up into a single Best Buy Software Installer applet. You can launch that and see the offers, or ignore it and delete the icon from the desktop.

Another piece of software, the Samsung Support Center (SSC) app, is a centralized location that houses troubleshooting/diagnostic utilities and support info. Samsung’s warranty for the Q430-11 is typical for the class: a single year for parts and labor, with toll-free tech support or live chat (including assistance via remote desktop). What's unusual is that you can launch the latter via the SSC utility.

The Samsung Q430-11 does exact a few compromises to get its price under $1,000: namely, sacrificing Bluetooth, an eSATA port, and a few other extras. The machine’s dedicated graphics chip is a welcome step up from the integrated graphics of competitors like the HP Pavilion dm4t, but without Optimus technology to extend battery life (a feature that costs $0 to $22 per notebook, depending on whom you ask), Samsung comes up short on the Q430-11 in that regard. On the other hand, the Core i5 processor makes this one of the fastest sub-$1,000 thin-and-lights we’ve tested. If battery life is your main concern, go with the HP Pavilion dm4t, and if battery life and graphics are your two big things, you’ll be better served by the Asus U30Jc-A1. But if you want the fastest plugged-in CPU and GPU performance—and you get seduced by its looks—the Q430-11 is definitely your best bet.
Price (at time of review): $915 (mfr. est., as tested)

Samsung “Alexa” Chrome OS-based Netbook and Specs surfaced

Samsung “Alexa” Chrome OS-based Netbook and Specs surfaced
It was recently reported that Google’s Chrome OS netbook, the Cr-48, is out of beta testing and that it could be available this summer. The device may come with a subscription policy attached to a Google account and even a rental plan, but the most important detail has been left out: Who’s making the first one?

Earlier this year we heard that Acer was a possibility, as was Samsung. Now rumor has as leaning toward the latter, as a Chrome bug report unwittingly outed. The device is internally codenamed “Alex.” A Chromium Google doc title “Issue 13967 in chromium-os: Improve hardware components probing method” outlines USB/PCI operations, and specifically makes reference to “Samsung Alex.”

That’s not all. Various specs and a mockup have also surfaced via Google docs, although the page has since been restricted. Various blogs got a look beforehand, and here are the details according to Samsung Specs:

* 1280 x 800 pixel display
* (Probably) 10-inches
* 1.5 GHz dual-core Atom N550
* SanDisk SSD P4 (capacity unknown)
* 2 GB RAM
* Qualcomm Gobi 2000 3G card
* Bluetooth/Wi-Fi
* Namuga webcam
* Synaptics touchpad
* Card reader, USB ports, VGA output

It’s more than possible the Google I/O event next month will solidify or dash these rumors, and either way we’re hoping will reveal more about “Alex” and the Chrome OS netbook. If the device is actually launching this summer, we expect the details to keep coming.

Samsung RV511 A01 Laptops Specs

Samsung RV511 A01 Laptops Specs
Shoppers on a budget don't need to search far and wide for an affordable and stylish laptop. Not when you can pick up the Samsung RV511-AO1 for $549. This 15-inch notebook has plenty to offer home users and students, including a spacious island-style keyboard, long battery life, and a software package that's actually useful. This Intel Core i3-powered machine also has an attractive design, roomy 500GB hard drive, and high build quality. The question remains, how well does it stack up against other mainstream notebook competitors?

Design

Encased in silvery plastic, the 15.6-inch Samsung RV511 has a clean metallic look. The laptop's lid sports a finely ribbed surface with horizontal lines running across it. This washboard-like treatment is both attractive and defeats fingerprints. (Slight digression: The lid is also fun to scratch like you're a DJ.) Measuring 15 x 10 x 1.4 inches and weighing 5.4 pounds, the RV511 is easy to move from room to room and light enough to take on short trips.

Opening the notebook reveals the same smooth, pleasing, silver hue, paried with a glossy black center area that houses the keyboard. Two stereo speakers sit hidden within a slim rectangular grille located above the keyboard, and to the right of that is a large circular power button, ringed by cool blue light. The only indication of the laptop's low price is its bland black plastic underside, but even that area looks cleaner than other notebooks. Bottom line: Samsung knows design.

Keyboard and Touchpad :

The RV511's black, island-style keyboard is comfortable and has a good amount of spacing between keys. While flat, the square-shaped chiclet keys have a pleasing non-slip surface, and provide quiet but tactile feedback. Samsung also includes a number pad. Our only complaint is that the right Shift key is a bit small.

We really like the RV511's touchpad; measuring 3.5 x 2.2 inches, it's large and quite responsive. Using multi-touch gestures was a breeze, whether were zooming in and out of photos or scrolling down web pages. You can also use three fingers to flip through pictures. Two discrete mouse buttons--what we like to see--provided firm yet soft clicks.

Display and Audio :

The Samsung RV511's 15.6-inch widescreen has a standard resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels, sharp enough to display 720p HD video. We wish the viewing anglers were wider, but this panel is certainly fine for the price. When we streamed the HD trailer of Green Lantern, hues were well saturated and contrast high with deep black levels.

Samsung RV511 A01 Laptops Specs

Equipped with two stereo speakers and enhanced audio processing courtesy of SRS Labs, the RV511 can fill a small room with sound but isn't the loudest 15-inch notebook. "Magic" by LadyHawke was tinny at max volume. The HP Pavilion G6t (review coming soon), got much louder when we played the same tracks on each laptop.

Ports and Webcam

The RV511 has the standard array of ports for a mainstream machine. On the laptop's left are two USB ports, HDMI, a 4-in-1 media card reader, Ethernet, and headphone and microphone jacks. On the left side sits the Super Multi Drive to burn DVDs and CDs, an additional USB connection, plus a Kensington lock slot.

Above the screen is the RV511's 0.3 megapixel Webcam. The image quality for both video chats and still shots was about average; recorded footage was bright enough but blocky. However, the camera waked up and captured pics quickly.

Heat

After playing a Hulu video for 15 minutes, we logged temperatures of 90 degrees on the RV511's touchpad, 92 degrees in the keyboard's center, and 93 degrees on the notebook's underside. While below what we consider uncomfortable--95 degrees-- it was slightly warmer than the average temp for mainstream laptops in the same spots (88, 90, 94). Things really heated up by the RV511's vent on its left side, reaching a toasty 107 degrees there. We could feel the RV511 heating up on our lap during use, so you'll probably want to use it on a desk--or think twice about wearing shorts.

Samsung NP-N145 Plus Netbook PC

Samsung NP-N145 Plus Netbook PC
Given the rapid rise of tablet devices and the quickly plummeting prices of entry-level notebooks, you would think that no one would actually want a netbook anymore. Even so, these mini laptops are still around and there are still people who want to have them.

The Samsung NP-N145 Plus follows along the short-lived tradition of the netbook, offering many of the specs and features you’ve come to expect from products in this range. It’s no powerhouse, but it’s not priced as a powerhouse either. After all, it’s still cheaper than buying an iPad if all you want is some casual web surfing on a screen bigger than your smartphone.

Quick Spec Check

Anyone who has been in the market for a netbook PC in the last year or so won’t find too many surprises when it comes to the N145 Plus. It comes powered by an Intel Atom N450 processor. That’s a dual-core chip, moving along at 1.66GHz.

The fairly standard 10.1-inch display has a webcam embedded above it, Windows 7 Starter 32-bit runs the show, and you get backed up to 1GB of RAM, the usual assortment of ports, and an SD card reader.

First Impressions and Build Quality

I’ve encountered my fair share of cheap netbooks, using less than impressive materials and offering a less than acceptable build quality. Thankfully, the N145 Plus from Samsung isn’t like that.

For starters, they’ve opted away from the glossy surface of most netbooks for a matte finish all around. That’s a good thing, as you don’t have to worry (as much) about it being a fingerprint magnet. It’s also nice how the battery is designed in such a way as it “props up” the back part of the netbook. This allows for better ventilation on its underside.

Compared to many other netbooks in this price range, the Samsung N145 Plus certainly feels like it is better made than most. The guts inside, as described above, are pretty much par for the course though.

Keyboard and Trackpad

It’s not really a chiclet keyboard, but the keyboard does offer a decent amount of separation between the individual keys. They offer just the right amount of key travel and “clackiness” that I want to see in a keyboard. Remember that this is a netbook-sized keyboard, though, so if you haven’t dabbled in this realm before, you might find it a little cramped.

While I like how they laid out the directional keys (and page up/down keys) toward the bottom-right corner of the keyboard, I’m not a fan of the placement of the “\” key in that same corner. More often than not, when my right pinky finger went reaching for the shift key, I’d hit the “\” key instead. That’s terribly annoying. Look just above it; the key is basically duplicated. Get rid of the bottom one and give me a larger shift key, please.

As far as the trackpad is concerned, it offers a similar finish as the rest of the netbook. It’s smooth and of a decent size, given the netbook proportions. Multitouch gestures, like two-finger scrolling, work. Most people will likely want an external mouse for longer sessions, but it does the job in a pinch.

General Everyday Performance

If you’re expecting the kind of heavy lifting that you would get even with a bargain-minded consumer notebook, you’re going to be disappointed. This is anything but a powerhouse, but it’s just fine for the more basic tasks on your list.

Need to surf the web, watch a YouTube video, or edit a blog post? No problem. The smaller screen resolution of a netbook isn’t exactly ideal, but it is certainly more portable than its full-size notebook counterparts. I wouldn’t push the web browsing beyond a half dozen tabs or so, though, as it will start to lag.

Similarly, you probably don’t want to try doing any major picture or video editing on this either. You can do minor stuff in Movie Maker and Paint, but not much beyond that. Go in with the right expectations and you’ll get what you need.

Overall Thoughts

When netbooks first hit the scene, they seemed like a fascinating possibility. Smartphones weren’t nearly as widespread at the time and netbooks were a lot cheaper than real laptops. Then, the world changed.

I used to use a netbook for checking my e-mail on the go and doing some casual web surfing; I do that on a smartphone now. If I want to do any lifting that is remotely heavier, I whip out a real laptop instead. After all, you can get a bargain notebook for $400 or so no, which is awfully close to the price of a netbook.

This isn’t to knock the Samsung N145 Plus. Compared to other netbooks in the same range, it offers a good deal of quality and comfort, as well as a nice ergonomic design. However, the netbook market as a whole probably isn’t going to stick around much longer. People are much more inclined to use their smartphones (or tablets) for tasks previously assigned to the netbook. How much longer can they last?

Samsung S9/13.3-Inch Laptops Review

Samsung S9/13.3-Inch Laptops Review
It really seems that the notebook to fight for the title of “MacBook Air killer” just bigger with the release of S9 super-thin notebook CES 2011 Samsung 13.3-inch is packed with 2′nd generation Intel Core CPU, also known as Sandy Bridge.
