Sony VAIO VGN-FZ240N-B 15.4" Laptop Review

new Sony VAIO VGN-FZ240N-B 15.4
Sony one of the leading manufacturer of Laptops has released lightweight namely,Sony VAIO VGN-FZ240N/B. The Sony VAIO VGN-FZ240N/B laptop computer is crafted with an aesthetic touch and careful attention to detail. Offering a brilliantly colorful 15.4 inch XBRITE-ECO display, this 5.75-pound laptop maximizes LCD space with advanced space-saving engineering techniques, including a reconfigured battery and motherboard design. It's packed with entertainment features, including embedded A/V controls for one-touch access to your music, movies and pictures. A built-in 1.3-megapixel Webcam and microphone are seamlessly integrated into the durable silver magnesium chassis so you can video chat with friends, family and co-workers. The details related to the specs of the device are discussed below.

Sony VAIO VGN-FZ240N/B Laptop Specification :
  • Display: 15.4" LCD
  • Processor: 2.0 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T7250
  • Storage: 250 GB hard drive (Serial ATA)
  • RAM: 2 GB RAM (expandable up to 4GB of RAM)
  • Optical Drive: A CD R/RW with integrated DVD +/- R RW dual layer DVD burner
  • OS: Windows Vista Business
  • Imaging: Integrated Web Cam
  • Weight: 5.75 lbs
Price : $1,449.99 from [sony.laptops]Sony VAIO VGN-FZ240N-B 15.4This is a good midrange entry from Sony. I like that the body is made of a Magnesium alloy, it really feels sturdy to the touch and stays very cool. It is fairly light weight for a 15.4 inch Laptop and has a good low profile. The battery life however seems to be about average.

The good news though is that it is a fairly powerful laptop. The 2.0ghz T7250 is a great processor and enables the user to do a great deal of multitasking. The video card is integrated and derives it's video memory from the system memory, so the 2GB of RAM gets a little stretched. You'll be able to play medium intensity games, but don't expect to crank up the graphics to 11 and see smooth rendering. Though since it is a mid range laptop I hope that no one intends on doing that anyway.

The storage space is good, you can get about as many songs and movies as I would expect you would need at one time on the 250GB drive. That being said I would immediately clear out much of Sony's preinstalled trial ware. Much of it runs in the system tray or background and slows things down. Many of the programs don't even offer much that isn't already included in Windows Vista to begin with. It is just a nuisance and Sony is notorious for it.[www.associatedcontent.com]

There is also the option to upgrade to a dual channel SSD, which as we said will improve battery time further. "You can fly nonstop from Los Angeles to Tokyo or attend a full day of classes on just one charge with this S Series laptop when combined with the optional sheet battery."[laptops.techfresh.net]

Sony VAIO AW Series VGN-AW450F/H Notebook PC

Sony VAIO AW Series VGN-AW450F/H Notebook PC
Consumers who want a top-performing notebook should definitely consider the Sony VAIO AW Series VGN-AW450F/H Notebook PC. This sleek, high-quality, multimedia performer is great for watching Blu-Ray movies or playing the latest games. Like many other VAIO series notebooks, this model is loaded with useful features and plenty of room for upgrades. Unfortunately, the large dimensions and short battery life makes this notebook a better performer than traveler. If you need a notebook primarily for stationary use in home or office, then the Sony VGN-AW450FH is one to consider.

At 17.2" x 1.45" x 11.4" and 8.2 pounds, this notebook is a little too bulky for on-the-go functionality. Battery life is also a much less than average, coming in at only two and a half hours. The notebook's size and battery faults are certainly the negatives about this product. On the plus side, the Sony VAIO AW Series VGN-AW450FH is loaded with impressive features and performance capabilities. If you are a casual gamer or entertainment lover, then this may be the one for you.

Features

Considering the numerous features of the Sony VAIO VGN-AW450FH notebook, this is one of the better-equipped models for the price. It comes pre-loaded on 320GB SATA hard drive with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, as well as trial versions of Norton Internet Security and Microsoft Office. This 18.4" notebook features an Intel Core 2 Duo Processor P7450, supported by 4GB DDR2 RAM (8GB max) and a NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT graphics chipset (512MB memory). And with other great enhancements such as stereo Bluetooth, integrated WiFi a/b/g/n, and a Blu-Ray/DVD/CD combo drive, this model is hard to compete with for the price.
Ergonomics

Because of the bulkiness of this laptop, it is unlikely that you can take it on-the-go with the confidence that comes with an ultraportable or mid-sized notebook. This model best suits the needs of the casual gamer or home entertainer, whether it is for playing the latest video games or connecting the notebook to an HDTV via the HDMI to watch your favorite Blu-Ray movies. In addition to being bulky, another strike against this model is its poor battery performance. With less than 3 hours of operating time, users must stay aware of the battery life- and stay near an electrical outlet to ensure continual usage.
SummarySony VAIO AW Series VGN-AW450F/H Notebook PCIf you are looking for Sony quality, then expect a Sony price, but overall if you want the best performance and features in a notebook then consider the Sony VAIO AW Series VGN-AW450FH Notebook PC. Consumers looking for ultraportable laptops or models with long battery life should consider a different product- quite frankly, the VGN-AW450FH suffers in the areas of portability and battery life. But if you are a casual gamer or home entertainment fanatic, then by all means this may be the notebook for you.

Pros
  • Very functional and compatible with HDMI, Bluetooth, and more
  • Perfect for consumers who want more power than portability
  • Features Blu-Ray/DVD/CD drive, 320GB hard drive, 4GB RAM, NVIDIA graphics
  • Great multimedia performance for games and HD video

Cons
  • Poor battery life and bulky notebook size disappoints somewhat

Sony Vaio VPC-CA1S1E Notebook Review

Sony Vaio VPC-CA1S1E Notebook Review
Beacon buoy. "Envious" looks will be a sure thing with the CA range. The flashy color adorns itself with light effects, the workmanship is stable and the ergonomic rates are exemplary. We will clarify if the 14 incher really is only something for Fashion Week guests and "Glamour" readers
"Radiate light and stand out with performance". Sony introduced its 14.1 inch CA range with these words in February 2011. Those who caught sight of the gaudy devices in radiant black, white, green, purple and orange (test device) will certainly have thought: Well, likely an overpriced Vaio for the lifestyle faction. Nothing under the hood, but the "Glamour" reader will buy it.

Prejudice or fact? We'll put the orange sprout from the new CA-series through its paces. As usual, we won't allow the garish color to blind us. Instead, we will assess the construction, portability, ergonomic and technical qualities objectively.

Wherever the Vaio CA turns up, it is an eye-catcher. Where other laptops want to make a stylish and an elegant appearance, Vaio relies on flashy colors in a plastic skin. The CA-series isn't made for you if you don't want to attract attention like a bonfire. The surfaces' transparent coating (lid, wrist-rest) have been designed to "capture" light and radiate it. That even works in the office without direct sunlight. If you look at the Vaio on our pictures or in the video, you may believe Sony has embedded many effect LEDs to make the case light up. Fluorescing edges and corners – we also had this impression in the office – even when the 14.1 incher was turned off. So, no power is wasted on light effects.

The construction stands out with good stability, which applies to the lid and wrist-rest. The wrist-rest and lid's surface fit very tight and the latter doesn't dent even in its center. The case's only weak point is the optical drive. The surface can be evidently depressed underneath this area. The base unit only allows itself to be deformed to an extent, but it creaks then. The fairly high weight may be a drawback, but the thick, transparent plastic surfaces are the reason for the good stability.

The hinges tightly fit in position and have a firm hold on the lid. Since the base unit is so heavy, only one hand is needed for opening. The lid has a clear stop at its maximum opening angle and doesn't teeter. The solid traits convey a feeling of quality and long life despite the toyish looks.

Connectivity :

The Vaio CA doesn't have many interfaces. Sophisticated connections, such as eSATA, FireWire and ExpressCard, aren't installed. The sole USB 3.0 port can't compensate for this lack if users want to retrofit controller cards or connect their old eSATA/FireWire hard disks. A cardreader (SD and HG Duo) are found, typical for Vaios, on the front. A slider for the wireless modules (WLAN/BT) is also found here.

The port distribution is very unfavorable. The positioning towards the front deters placing a mouse on both sides. You'll at latest want the good old rear connections back when you have to fight your way through unwieldy VGA, HDMI or USB cables.

Communication :

The Atheros AR9285 bids wireless connections of the fastest generation as draft n standard. The Bluetooth module incorporated in the WLAN card unfortunately only supports the old standard, 2.1+EDR. The Atheros LAN adapter, AR8151, supports gigabit LAN.

Supplies :

There are no data carriers included for the 14 incher. Merely quick start, recovery and service instructions can be found. A recovery DVD has to be created by the user (Vaio Assistant).

Warranty :

Sony has a 24 month bring in warranty for the Vaio CA. It consists of a 1 year base warranty plus an additional 1 year warranty.

Input Devices :

*Keyboard

We didn't allow the looks to blind us and checked if the keyboard has more to offer than only a backlight. The somewhat slippery keys are firmly mounted on the surface. Only stronger pressure above the DVD drive can provoke indentation. The keys have a firm stroke, a clear pressure point, but regrettably a short key drop. The fingers move around slightly disorientated due to the even key surface (no conic inward cavity). The typing feel, seen alone, is fun due to the crisp pressure point. Since there is no number pad, the key layout is generous in terms of gaps (almost four millimeters) and key size. The layout is otherwise identical with that of the Vaio VPC-SB1Z9EB.

*Touchpad

The knobbed mouse pad has very good gliding traits and deters the feel and looks of a touch-to-smear field due to its surface. Horizontal and vertical scroll bars aren't marked on the Synaptics Touchpad V7.4, but they nevertheless exist. Two finger gestures are executed quickly for the purpose of a full-fledged multi-touchpad. We find key use feasible. The medium key drop in the outer areas of both keys has a fairly soft stroke and the pressure point is found very soon. The bright click noise may annoy some users, but it's tolerable.

*Display

The reflective screen isn't convincing with its low contrast ratio. We determine a contrast of only 141:1 for the 14.1 inch display (1366x768 pixels, WXGA). A higher contrast of at least 400:1 would let colors look more vivid. This way, movies or pictures look rather more bleached than brilliant and fresh. Consequently, the small color space when the colors are reproduced isn't much of a surprise. The Samsung screen (model: 140AT08-S02, Sony: VAIO Display) lags behind the reference color spectrums of AdobeRGB and sRGB (color gamut in ICC profile). The Vaio EB4X shows which spectrum a good consumer screen can cover (VAIO Plus screen).

Performance :

The Sandy Bridge CPU, Intel Core i5-2410M (2x2.23 GHz) has a turbo rate of up to 2.9 GHz. Depending on the temperature, the CPU can even go further under the new Turbo 2.0 concept. Intel's 2011 Cores can increase the rate beyond the definite maximum clock rate via the "Dynamic Range @ Turbo Frequency Limits" – if the cooling plays along and certain temperature limits aren't surpassed.

The AMD Radeon HD 6470M (512 MB) is solely responsible for 3D calculations because the HD Graphics 3000 in the processor is disabled (no hybrid graphics). The RAM configuration is 4GB, whereas two 2048 MB modules occupy both RAM slots.

How fast does the 2410M (2.3 GHz) compute in comparison to the 2010 i5 generation? The 2410M achieves good 4510 points in single core calculation (Cinebench R10 Single 64bit). A 2010 460M (2.53 GHz, Turbo 2.8 GHz) is defeated with 3939 points despite a higher clock rate (e.g. Acer Aspire 3820TG, 13.3 inch).

Single core processing isn't as relevant for routine use. You will benefit from multi-threading with a higher clock if you encode videos with Cyberlinks Power Director. The installed 2410M achieves 9451 points. The 2010 i5-460M (4 threads) is clearly beaten: 8060 up to 8342 points (e.g. Acer Aspire 5820TG). In return, the current sister model, i5-2520M (4 threads), can accomplish 10128 points (Cinebench R10 Multi 64 bit).

Sony VAIO VGN-CR320E/W 14.1 inch Laptops

Sony VAIO VGN-CR320E/W 14.1 inch Laptops
New laptops in 2011 : I’m lucky enough that with my job that I have the opportunity to access a number of the newer laptops and PC’s as they arrive on the market. I’ve taken home the Sony VAIO VGN-CR320E/W today and I’ve decided to give it a test drive. Now I’m going to let you know what I think about it and who should buy it.

We all know that Sony means quality backed with unparallel customer support. Unfortunately the consumer often pays a premium to have that Sony label attached to their product. The Sony VAIO VGN-CR320E/W comes in at the mid-to-low price point and is currently one of their best selling portables on the market. Well enough of this here is what she’s running.

14.1 inch″ screen

Intel Core 2 Duo T7250 processor

2 GB of RAM (DDR2 SD) (expandable to 4GB)

250 GB hard drive

CD R/RW dual layer DVD R/RW drive

Integrated Video card

Weight 5.5 lbs

At first glance this laptop has a little bit of a striking appearance. It’s not overly gaudy with graphics or any of the other gimmicks some of the other manufactures are currently slapping on their hardware. Mine is white with VAIO written in the center of the back side of the screen in typical style. For a 14.1″ it comes out a little hefty but it is about right for this price point. The 1.3 Megapixel digital camera is becoming fairly common in this price point and the VAIO’s doesn’t set it apart.

Sony’s XBRITE-ECO screen is fantastic. It is quite crisp and you should compare it to other laptops at a retail store before you buy. You’ll be amazed. Glare is minimal and the screen is bright. I’m typing this in an overly bright fluorescent lit office and I find the screen performs fine. The screen pumps out a 1280 x 800 resolution which is a native 720p, so don’t expect “True HD”. Although you would be hard pressed to spend this much and find that in another laptop. The integrated video card is a disappointment. Despite the Firewire port you won’t be using this machine to do a tremendous amount of your video editing. Simple applications are fine, like watching movies and light editing but anything more seems to overwhelm her.

The processing power is adequate however when multi-tasking it tends to get a little bogged down. Even just with a few web browsers open and a few office programs you can note a sustainable straining.

Lets discuss the connectivity:

Bluetooth (A must for any new laptop)

1 Fire wire (this can be used to quickly transfer video files from your digital camcorder to your PC)

3 2.0 USB ports (these are used for connecting things like printers, cameras, and iPods, this is a standard number of ports at this price range)

1 VGA out (for typical monitors)

1 S-Video out (for things like projectors)

1 Memory stick / memory stick duo slot (Sony loves themselves)

1 SD memory slot

1 Ethernet port

1 Modem port

1 Mic in / 1 Speaker out

The connectivity is average if not perhaps a little below average for the price point. There is the omission of a HDMI out, which is probably ok and comes as no surprise due to the integrated graphics card. Next is the lack of memory cards supported. In Sony Fashion there is always a memory stick slot but if you have anything other than a Sony digital camera or a camera running on an SD card you’ll need to connect via USB (those are just examples). Many laptops in this price range offer a 5 in 1 card reader giving the user more options. The Bluetooth is crucial and I’m glad this laptop is equipped. There are more and more Bluetooth enabled devices every day.

The windows vista home premium is preloaded and comes with a lot of options. They market the laptop as being able to be used as a Tivo. This is a stretch; it’s just an option available via home premium and without an HDMI, and running an integrated video card, it’s kind of useless.

Lastly Sony is famous for their preloaded software. Most of this stuff is trial-ware from their partners. There is so much on this laptop that performance is noticeably affected straight out of the box. These have to be removed before effective use. Most of these programs are redundant as the operating system offers many of their features preloaded. The battery life is also a bit disappointing, you won’t be watching anymore than 1 movie on that overnight flight, that is for sure.

The final word is at the $1000+ price point this Sony comes up a little short. Wait until the price drops a little or find it on sale. Otherwise you’re just overpaying for a brand name and no one wants to do that.

Sony VAIO VPCS139LE/B Ultraportable Laptops

Sony VAIO VPCS139LE/B Ultraportable Laptops
Sony’s VAIO Z-Series contains some of the best ultraportable laptops available to buy, but they’re extremely expensive.

Those not looking to bankrupt themselves on a Sony ultraportable would do well to check out the well-rounded VAIO VPCS139LE/B (£779 inc. VAT), which offers great portability, power and usability.

Portability is decent and, although the 303-minute battery life can’t compete with the Asus U35JC-RX080V or Apple MacBook 13-inch, it offers more than enough power for medium-length journeys.

Having said that, the 2kg chassis is a little on the heavy side, but it won’t realistically cause you many issues.

Build quality is excellent and the magnesium-alloy chassis is rock solid, providing excellent protection for the laptop’s internal components. This also provides a hard base for the keyboard which, along with the Apple MacBook, is one of the best.

The isolation style board – whereby each key sticks up through a hole in the chassis – works well, with the keys providing a snappy action and comfortable travel.

Strong lid

The screen lid is also strong, protecting the display from bumps and bashes on the road.

Colour reproduction is good, as is detail, courtesy of the 1366 x 768-pixel resolution, but we expected a brighter panel from Sony. There’s also a shiny Super-TFT screen coating in place, unlike the Toshiba, which tends to create irritating reflections in bright light.

The Intel Core i3 processor – the same as in the Asus – provides more than enough performance for everyday work, and those looking to run multiple applications concurrently will be well catered for here – although for ultimate power the Intel Core i5-powered Toshiba here is hard to beat.

The integrated Intel chip provides more than enough graphical performance for viewing and even editing your photos. Unlike all but the Toshiba, there’s also an optical drive for reading and burning DVDs and CDs. This will no doubt prove a key selling point for those wanting to back up their data to disc or watch DVDs.

The 500GB hard drive is generous, and will take some time to fill, unless you have vast amounts of data to carry around with you.

The Sony also boasts a wealth of features. There’s the VAIO and Assist hotkeys while an ExpressCard slot and FireWire port – the latter being a unique feature – are also included.

We’re big fans of the Sony VAIO VPCS139LE/B. It costs quite a bit less than the Toshiba Portege R700-15x, offers a broadly similar experience when it comes to power and portability, yet at the same time offers better usability. A great machine and one that is easy to recommend.

Sony Vaio Z Series with Core i7 Laptops Review

Sony Vaio Z Series with Core i7 Laptops Review
Sony's stunning VAIO Z Series has long been the standard by which all high-end ultraportable laptops should be compared.

Packing style, usability and high-performance into a sleek and sturdy sub-2kg chassis, the VAIO Z Series has frequently and vastly bettered such high-quality rival laptops as the Toshiba Portégé R600 and Apple MacBook Air.

It was with some trepidation, therefore, that we received the news that Sony was fitting its latest flagship model – the Sony VAIO VPCZ11Z9E/B – with a high-powered processor from Intel's cutting-edge Core i7 range, a discrete Nvidia graphics card and a staggering 6GB of DDR3 memory – components far more at home in the largest high-end desktop replacement.

Is it really possible to pack such powerful components into such a slim and lightweight ultraportable laptop? And if so, wouldn't it massively overheat the chassis and reduce battery life to almost zero?

In short, we felt that Sony had set itself a challenge to break the laws of physics. Believe it or not, Sony has managed the impossible.

As soon as you pick up the Sony VAIO VPCZ11Z9E/B, you're immediately struck by the high quality of the build.

Designed using hybrid carbon fibre and milled aluminium, the 1.4kg chassis is lightweight and highly resilient, making it ideal for a busy life on the move. Only the base of the chassis flexes very slightly under pressure, but not enough to be a concern.

The gunmetal grey colour scheme and metallic finish makes the Sony VAIO VPCZ11Z9E/B something of a high-end executive status symbol, and it looks fantastic.

With the chassis slanting from 33mm at its rear when closed to just 22mm at the front, it can comfortably be carried in the hand when walking and slips easily into and out of a carry case when travelling.

Despite its slim dimensions, the chassis provides ample connectivity.

On the left-hand side you'll find a Gigabit Ethernet port for high-speed wired network access, two USB 2.0 ports for connecting external peripherals, a compact 34mm ExpressCard slot and an HDMI-out port for digitally connecting to a high-definition TV.

The right-hand side of the VAIO VPCZ11Z9E/B's chassis is sparser, with just a single USB port and a VGA-out for connecting the VAIO to older analogue monitors and projectors.

An integrated DVD/CD rewriter occupies the remaining space – this is still a surprisingly rare feature for such a slim machine, so it's to Sony's credit that it's been included here.

Rather than an eject button on the drive itself, a small button above the keyboard is used instead. This sits alongside two other buttons seen on many new VAIO laptops.

The 'VAIO' button launches Sony's Media Gallery multimedia software, for browsing your photos and music, while 'Assist' launches Sony's handy troubleshooting and system maintenance tool.

Essential for a mobile business tool such as this, the spacious keyboard is a pleasure to use. Built using the popular isolated-key – or 'chiclet' – style, each key is cut through a hole in the VAIO Z Series' top panel.

Not only does this provide ample space between each key, but it also prevents dust and debris from falling beneath and affecting responsiveness of the keys.

We found the keys to be firmly fixed and responsive, moving with a quiet motion. The raised palm-rest adds to the keyboard's comfort, making it easy to work for long periods of time with the VAIO VPCZ11Z9E/B.

While there is no dedicated numeric keypad, a Num Lock key transforms sixteen of the alphabet keys into a numeric keypad for entering data.

The keyboard is also backlit, with an ambient light sensor detecting how bright your location is and adjusting the backlighting accordingly – dimming when not in use, to preserve battery life.

Unfortunately, we found the keyboard to lack the brightness of rival machines such as the Apple MacBook Pro and it was not as easy to view in low-light conditions as we'd have liked.

We liked

Packing Intel's full-powered Core i7 processor and 6GB of DDR3 memory into such a small machine is a phenomenal feat, and easily makes this the most powerful ultraportable laptop around.

The use of a high-powered discrete Nvidia graphics card in such a small chassis is another impressive addition. Offering enough power for full-time multimedia use and gaming, you can enjoy the performance of a much larger laptop.

The combination of hybrid carbon fibre and milled aluminium used in the manufacturing of the chassis creates an exclusive and high-class look and feel for the VAIO VPCZ11Z9E/B, making it as tough as it is eye-catching.

Somehow, Sony has managed to combine the vibrancy of its glossy X-Black screen technology with the non-reflective surface of a standard TFT screen, making its 13.1-inch backlit LED screen a joy to behold. The Full HD resolution is the icing on the cake.

The spacious and well designed keyboard makes the VAIO VPCZ11Z9E/B a pleasure to work with at all times. Its keys respond firmly and quietly, and at no time does the board ever feel uncomfortable or frustrating to use.

We disliked

While the keyboard's backlighting and ambient light sensor is a good idea in theory, in practice we'd have preferred the backlighting to have been significantly brighter. Even in pitch-black conditions it just isn't enough.

The same can be said of the 13.1-inch LED screen's. While it is more than bright enough for use in most conditions, we've seen better on other laptops, and improved brightness would have really brought the screen to life.

The use of a Full HD resolution by Sony is commendable and adds to the professional specification of the VAIO VPCZ11Z9E/B, but its use on such a small screen is sure to pose a problem for those with limited eyesight, as text is extremely small and hard to read.

Five hours of battery life is an amazing achievement for such a high-powered machine, but we can't help but nitpick and say that we'd have preferred something closer to eight hours of use. Call us picky but this would've made this fantastic laptop even better.

While SSD storage certainly has its uses, a slim 2.5-inch hard drive could've doubled storage to 500GB and many users wouldn't have noticed much difference in the extra weight it added or the minutes it may have shaved off the battery life.

Verdict

With the release of the Intel Core i7-powered VAIO VPCZ11Z9E/B, Sony has raised the bar even higher than before, offering an as-yet unmatched combination of cutting-edge performance and features ideal for the most demanding needs.

While the price is certainly high, there's no doubt that this is the best ultraportable laptop you can currently buy.
